back to The DigestStop Food Waste Day: Small Steps to make a Big Difference
‘Stop Food Waste Day’ is an opportunity to take stock of our food consumption habits and make changes to reduce our environmental impact.
Why should we care about food waste?
One-third of all food produced globally goes to waste, while millions of people go hungry. Stop Food Waste Day is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness of food waste. The day gives us the perfect opportunity to try some simple changes that help improve our day to day kitchen habits. At Grubby, we contribute to the movement by starting right at the beginning. Our packaging is 100% recyclable, compostable and produced in the UK in over 95% of cases. You won't find us using any unnecessary plastics. Our pods, trays and bags are all made of recyclable materials.
Here’s how you can start making a difference from home,
Store your food properly:
Most fresh produce seems to have a live fast, die young motto, but by storing it properly you could extend its shelf life. Double check that little dial in your fridge to make sure it’s set at the right temperature, 4 degrees C is the best setting for most foods. Try to always store food in airtight containers to keep it fresh.
Buy only what you need:
One of the biggest causes of food waste is buying too much food that ends up going bad before it can be consumed. A way around this is to plan your meals for the week ahead and only buy what you need. At Grubby, we deliver pre-portioned ingredients, so all you’re left with is wrappers and peels, and even those are recyclable and reusable.
Use up your leftovers:
Leftovers don't have to be sloppy and boring. Get creative in the kitchen and turn them into new dishes, pretty much anything can be turned into a snack if you’re committed enough. Leftover vegetables can be used to make a hearty soup, and before you bin the peels, imagine the glow up if you turn them into crisps like Leo did below.
No Waste Peel Crisps Support food waste reduction initiatives:
So many supermarkets and food charities are working to reduce food waste by redistributing surplus food to those in need. Look out for these initiatives and support them where you can. If you order Grubby regularly, you’re already halfway there; Grubby partners with two fantastic food waste partners to offset any food waste, so no grub goes unused.
Compost your food waste:
Food waste that can't be consumed can still be put to good use. Composting is a great way to turn food waste into nutrient-rich soil for your garden or plants. You know what they say: one man’s trash is another plant’s snack.
Don't be a wasteman, take action today by ordering food responsibly.
